Why should I raise my Power Level?

The player character’s might is represented by their power level, often known as Light Level or simply Light. The character’s equipped gear’s Power value plus the artifact power level determine this value. Each character starts with a Power Level of 1100.

In Destiny 2, there are just a few light caps:

1500 light lvl – Easy cap – Getting here is as simple as playing any activity you like;
1550 light lvl – Strong cap – you must complete weekly challenges to reach this level;
1560 light lvl – Pinnacle cap, is the highest demanding power level. This can be accomplished by participating in high-skill events such as nighttime and raids. Once you’ve hit the Powerful Gear cap, you’ll need to transfer to Pinnacle Gear to get 10 more levels you need to achieve the absolute Gear cap;
Artifact is the only way to get 1560-1580 light levels.
